National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools
September 30 is the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools. We are called not only to remember, but to listen, learn and participate in the ongoing work of healing! For more than a century Native children across the country were taken from their families and placed in government and church-run boarding schools to “assimilate” them into society. Cultural suppression and widespread abuse produced trauma, much of which has shaped future generations. Please join me in taking a moment to reflect on the actions of our nation as I pray for reconciliation.
